While volunteering with disaster response efforts after a massive earthquake in Pisco, Peru in 2007, Mark began pondering how his experience in the restaurant business could lend itself after such a devastating event. In 2016, after nine months volunteering and getting to know a community in The Philippines, he gathered some volunteers to perform a feeding for kids on the 3rd anniversary of Typhoon Yolanda. The idea of Barangay Kitchen was born, as volunteers would raise money for a specific event and go into the barangays (villages) to cook with and for affected communities. To date, teams have fed thousands after volcanic eruptions, typhoons, on Christmas, and on days of remembrance.
Every situation is different, but we always talk with the local officials, parents, local churches, and those managing evacuation centers to find out how best to assist. Many times, it can be a mass feeding of a hot meal. Other times, we have provided sandwiches, eggs, canned goods, and even utensils. And we love getting people involved!
